It saddens me to hear about or see people live their lives based on what other people say about them or have suggested to them. It is very disheartening when I see young women, and even some young men, follow after their boyfriend/girlfriend because that is all they can wrap their minds around. One reason why it hurts me is because I used to be one of those feeble-minded individuals.
One example: You ever see those kids in high school that refer to themselves as a “couple” but literally have no clue as to what they are doing? And then either the boyfriend or girlfriend follows him/her to college, only to be used, trampled upon, and thrown to the dogs… Then later on in life they realized that maybe they should not have chosen that college because of him/her, maybe they should have taken the career path they always dreamed of instead of listening to the lies of that person that said they couldn’t do it.
It can be in adulthood too, where a person allows family or those close to them to control their decisions. Of course, there are some that can give wise counsel, but for this post I am referring to those who just try to control other people lives. God has given each of us a purpose and a calling, and we have to tap into it. Even God is not controlling, so why would he send someone to control you…its because they are not from Him, even if they are Christians. Over the course of our lives, He gives us nudges and clues as to what He has planned for us. Could be a childhood dream or desire. Maybe He had someone speak into your life years ago and what they said pulled at your heartstrings but you thought you were beneath the calling.
Far too many times people give others the power to control their lives, and its usually to those who had dreams that never came to pass because they settled for less than for their own lives.
Here’s the deal: When you are walking in the Will of God, you have a peace to know that He is directing your steps and you don’t ever have to waste time on things that do not matter to you. Learn to shut down the opinions of others, especially when they do not align with what God has already told you. If you do not know your purpose, seek God, put Him first and ask Him. He’s not some farawary diety. He’s right there with you.
John 14:26 (ESV)
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
